Shopping at Foreign Stores Online

Friday, June 25th, 2010

One of the great things about shopping online is that you can buy from stores all around the world. But, when you do buy clothes from a foreign online store, there are some special considerations that need to be made.

Shipping
Shipping is the main issue with shopping at foreign stores online. If they use FedEx, UPS or DHL, there shouldn’t be any issues. But, if they use their domestic mail system, there is a good chance there will be huge delays in shipping. You should contact the retailer first to verify which method of shipping they use.

Duties or Tariffs
Most clothing items being imported to your country will have a tariff imposed on it when it enters your country. This number will sometimes depend on where the garment is made, and it is usually a percentage of the total cost on the invoice. For some countries, it can be as high a 20%, so you need to know this in advance, or you may end up paying a lot of extra money you thought you would save.

Restrictions
Finally, there may be international shipping restrictions on specific brands of clothing. For example, some brands of jeans sold from stores in the US cannot be sent anywhere outside the country. The retailer has a territorial agreement on where they can ship their clothing. You need to be aware of this before you order.

As long as you keep the above information in mind, your online shopping experience will be an enjoyable one!
